Final Thought: Choose Life or Choose Death
September 2009

This concept (articulated in the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy) – of choosing life or choosing death – has many more applications in our day than this writer originally supposed. It does not just apply to physical life or death, although the latter (i.e., via suicide) would be the ultimate in the concept.

There are many kinds of death in addition to the obvious one (physical death): financial death (bankruptcy or impoverishment); relational death (divorce, separation, estrangement); death of health (disease, infirmity, physical weakness); spiritual death (separation from God); the death of a dream (the loss of hope, vision, a purpose, or passion for life); the death of freedom (slavery, tyranny, people control); sexual death (too old or busy or stressed for intimate relations); intellectual death (the dumbing down of a person, people, or nation – resulting in the inability to think, reason, discern, or understand the important issues of life).

Most of these forms of death happen gradually over a long period of time (months, years, or decades), through a series of bad decisions or mistakes – hundreds (maybe even thousands) of bad decisions (or errors in judgment) which have a cumulative, destructive, debilitating, and ultimately devastating result. Hundreds of bad dietary decisions over a period of years or decades lead to the death of health via toxic organs (and bodies), weakened immune systems, premature aging, and ultimately disease (and eventually physical death).

In the financial realm, a few (or dozens or hundreds) of poor decisions (based on inaccurate information, impulsiveness, or simply bad judgment) can lead to bankruptcy or impoverishment. (Think of millions of Americans’ undisciplined buying of everything (unneeded) from A to Z in recent years; their dozens (or hundreds) of purchases on credit cards or leverage; their binge buying of real estate in the first six years of this decade (or dot-coms in the latter ’90s). Probably no single decision ruined them, but, for millions of Americans, a series of bad financial decisions has led to financial death.

Marriages usually don’t die in a week, month, or year, but gradually through a long series of bad decisions (and destructive actions). Most such decisions are not large in and of themselves, but they are cumulative, and can end in the death of a marriage (now occurring in 60% of American marriages).

Intellectual death has occurred in tens of millions of Americans (perhaps the majority) as they have been dumbed down by the educational system (for excellent analysis of this phenomenon, read the book The Dumbest Generation by Mark Bauerlein), by television, movies, video games, and by not reading good books. Such people have lost the ability to think deeply, discern right from wrong or good from evil, connect the dots, or anticipate consequences of actions. The ominous results of the November 2008 national elections reflected the intellectual death of the majority of Americans and showed how easily such people could be deceived and manipulated.

The death of freedom in America has been so gradual but relentless since the 1960s that, by the early 1990s, all of the planks of Norman Thomas’s Socialist Party of America had been implemented. Like slowly boiling the frog until he eventually dies, the liberals, socialists, and globalists have been dismantling our Constitution and putting controls on every aspect of Americans’ lives – but so gradually that most never noticed.

By the turn of the century, the 45 goals of the Communist Party USA (laid out in the 1950s) and exposed in Cleon Skousen’s classic book The Naked Communist, had become a fait accompli in America.

Most Americans would find the recent Pravda (Russian) statements that America has become a Marxist state incomprehensible – in part because they are totally clueless as to what Marxism or Communism are; and in part because they have no knowledge or understanding of the U.S. Constitution, of our history, or of the essential elements of freedom.

Our leftist educational system has done its job over the past five decades – liberalizing two generations and/or terminally dumbing them down. This writer believes that, with the overwhelming U.S. election of the far left last November, freedom, as we knew it for 232 years in America, died – without so much as a whimper.

Another form of death is spiritual death – separation from God. It happened in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve disobeyed (rebelled against) God (See Genesis 2 and 3) and it can happen to a nation (such as Israel – which turned against the Lord many times in the Old Testament – or such as most of Europe today). In this writer’s opinion, it is happening in America today – where the great majority of Americans are “religious,” but are not true followers of the God of the Bible or His Son Jesus. Alexander Solzhenitsyn described America (a decade or so ago) as “a nation that had forgotten God.” He felt that our morals and culture were being totally corrupted (in part by the political left – part of the Gramsci Strategy – and in part by a half-century of nonstop, unprecedented prosperity). Solzhenitsyn believed that America (the nation) was dying spiritually, just as Europe and Russia had in the latter 18th century and throughout most of the 19th century.

But the Bible makes it clear (with hundreds of examples) that an individual can die spiritually as well, by turning from God, ignoring Him, His principles and commands, and following other (evil, anti-God) voices. This writer agrees with Solzhenitsyn that America is presently dying spiritually (e.g., Harry Potter has a greater following than the God of the Bible in many quarters).

In this writer’s opinion, the spiritual death of America is also accompanied by the moral/cultural death of America. This happened in Germany (a religious nation) in the 1920s and ’30s as Hitler and the Third Reich were coming to power (with the support of over 85% of the so-called Christians – the vast majority of whom supported him until 1942). Spiritual death in a nation or individual sets the stage for great evil. This writer believes that such evil is descending on America now! (Think French Revolution – 1789! Think Germany – 1933-37!)

The Bible admonishes us in a number of places to wake up, to return to our former faith, to turn away from evil, to remember God’s warnings and His examples of judgment (think Noah’s day; think Sodom and Gomorrah; think 712 BC when Israel [the Northern Kingdom] was conquered and enslaved by Assyria; think 586 BC when Judah [the Southern Kingdom] was conquered and enslaved by Babylon; think 70 AD, when Israel was conquered and Jerusalem destroyed by the Romans).

The Bible is filled with warnings from the Lord (for nations and individuals) against turning from Him and following great evil. He admonishes mankind, in Deuteronomy 28 to choose life, not death – and tells us throughout the Bible how to do so.

As Deuteronomy 28:1-6 says: “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock – the calves of your herd and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough (the economy) will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.”

Verses 15-19: “However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all of these curses will come and overtake you: You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. Your breadbasket and kneading trough (the economy) will be cursed. The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks (i.e., economic disaster). You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.”

Verse 45: “All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and the decrees he gave you. They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendents forever.”

Deuteronomy 30:15, 16, 19 continues: “See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep His demands, decrees and laws; then you will live, and increase and the Lord your God will bless you…This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God. Listen to His voice and hold fast to Him.”

The whole book of Proverbs is also about choosing life over and against death – in a myriad of ways. The great majority of Americans (in my opinion) are not choosing life, but are choosing death in most of the ways described above. Hence, the nation as a whole is also choosing death.

It is this writer’s hope and prayer that MIA readers will choose life over death in their own personal lives, financial lives, marriages, health, and spiritual lives as well. And that is the bottom line!

In January 2007, a man with a violin entered a busy Washington DC subway station. He put out a collection cup and proceeded to play six difficult pieces by Bach.

During the 45 minutes the violinist played, over 2,000 people walked by. Only six adults bothered to listen, and then only briefly. However, many children stopped until they were hustled along by their parents.

The commuters didn't know it but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the world's finest musicians. He was using a rare instrument valued at $3.5 million. Two days earlier, Mr. Bell performed the same pieces in Boston where people paid $100 apiece to hear him.

The experiment showed that most people don't recognize quality unless many others feel the same way. People are also greatly influenced by their surroundings. Hardly anyone expected a virtuoso performance from a subway "fiddle player," so they didn't pay attention to the music.

There was one important exception to the rule: the children, who are not burdened with preconceptions about life and music. When they heard Mr. Bell play, they realized it was wonderful.
